Leila and a little PB : Shelby County Backpack Program Feeds our Kids

GUESS WHAT???? Kroger has peanut butter on sale – 10 for $10 – making them just $1 a piece. Soooo when you’re shopping for your bread and eggs to save you during the snow storm, you should pick up some peanut butters!

Shelby County Public Schools sends home food to the neediest children in our community through the backpack food program to keep them fed while they’re away from school. As I have worked on many of my documentary projects, I got to see how important this opportunity is to the survival of kids in our own town. The program runs off of donations from our community, both food and monetary. Peanut butter is a staple for longer breaks and snowy times. Kids can eat for days on a jar :)

Feel free to drop your PB by the store and I will take care of it. You can even drop it by the Shelbyville branch of Republic Bank and at the School District’s Central Office on Main Street.

Together, lets stock up their pantry!

Comments for Cans: 32

Posted on February 22nd, 2009 by Elizabeth. Filed in Blog reader participation

#24 on my list of 28 in 2008 consisted of:

Get my readers to comment more, doesn’t matter how I get it done

After I spent the better part of my last semester working with a youth football team I was touched by their giving Thanksgiving baskets to families in need. A few days later many of my photographer friends started a Cans for Comments campaign during the holidays on their blogs. I decided to put these two projects together and commit to donating a can to someone in need for every comment made on this blog.

This morning I stopped by a sweet lady’s home. She was one of the places I stopped with the football team right before Thanksgiving. She has cancer, is caring for her two granddaughters, both suffering from conditions made by the drugs their mother used during their pregnancies. I spent an afternoon in the fall talking, crying and laughing with her. She taught me lots about faith, endurance and being grateful. I only wish you could have all been sitting on the couch with me as she shared her life.

I stopped by and left your 32 items of food on her doorstep while she was off to church. My hope in posting this is to initiate a little change, to remind you that such a simple act of kindness goes a long way. Comments or not, this is something we should all take a minute to do, me included. So many of our local food banks were depleted by the recent ice storms and could use a replenish.

Grab an extra can or two every time you go to the grocery, then take your collection somewhere at the end of the month. According to my blog stats, if half of you 100ish weekly readers collected 10 cans in March we would donate 500 cans. Just a little fuel for your fire. And if you comment about your cans donated, that’s another 50 coming from me, for a total of 550 cans.

Just an FYI, I will continue to donate to specific people I encounter while working on my stories at school. When I return to Shelbyville the goods will be donated to the Shelby County Backpack Project for a bit. You can read about that here. The project is a local outreach that sends home meals and snacks with needy children to feed them over the weekend. You can help support them by stopping in McKinley’s in Shelbyville and purchasing their art.

Hope your Sunday is swell. It’s sunny here and Leila and I got to take a pretty walk this morning – still a little too chilly :-)

Giving back…

Posted on December 11th, 2008 by Elizabeth. Filed in Blog reader participation, Personal

I just loooooveeee some Christmas time and as I shop, shop, shop and shoot, shoot, shoot I am reminded…

It’s that time of year. STEP 1: Open your wallet. STEP 2: Pour out the dough. STEP 3: Take home your bags of gifts (or wait for the UPS man to deliver them) Hahaha.

All of this is super-sweet, so long as we’re remembering how small we are in this big world – how many people are in need – and that we can do our part to help them out.

dsc_0575.jpg

I have been given a heart for people…and my little heart has been affected by some pretty amazing folks this semester. For that I am super thankful. From Coach Danny and his football team delivering Thanksgiving meals to itty-bitty Annalee (you’ll meet her this week) who shares her sweet smile with the whole world – I have seen almost daily how fortunate I am to have my health, a job I LOVE and amazing friends and family to share it with.

So what’s with the soup cans?!?! A ton of my photographer friends are using their blogs to generate some goodwill…so I am going to do the same. But I’m going to step it up a notch.

FOR EVERY COMMENT MADE FOREVER AND EVER ON THIS BLOG, I WILL DONATE A CANNED GOOD SOMEWHERE SPECIAL!

So far, we’re at 8 cans…so for the next little bit, I will be posting all of my work from this semester that you haven’t seen. You’ll have tons to talk about and no reason not to comment. Share with your friends…I can’t wait to take a picture of waaaayyy more than a few cans before the new year.

Other ways Lizzie Loo gives back:
*Celebrating Adoption
*Families with newborn babies struggling to survive can always pick up the tele and I will rush to the hospital to photograph the new family with their child. Families receive a DVD of all their images
*Folks in the military always get 10% off of services and products

And the final surprise…soon, very soon I will be hosting a contest to give away wedding photography to a super-sweet couple. A full day – an assistant, digital files..the whole she-bang. So get to thinking of who you know that could be the one(s).

And for the record…my roommate just wants it to snow. Hope your day is amazing.

.28.in.2008.update.

Posted on January 30th, 2008 by Elizabeth. Filed in Blog reader participation, Personal

You may remember my post of 28 things to do in 2008, here. I wanted to give a little update on my progress.

1. I’m halfway to having all of the prints hung and the place looking like me. I even found some old cameras to have around. You’ll have to come visit soon :-)

10. I’m almost done with my business book for January, Selling the Invisible, by Harry Beckwith. I have already started my February book, You, Inc., also by Mr. Beckwith. I LOVE them so far!

12. I cooked some fabulous Sesame Chicken with broccoli for my friends, so we’ll see if I can keep it up for a month.

18. I’m looking to add a new camera this week. We’ll see :-)

19. Abby and I have plans for cake decorating this summer at Conway’s in Middletown. You should tag along – some of our friends are going to do it, too.

20. I’m doing really well at the fast food quest. My boyfriend eats more Taco Bell and junky food than you can imagine, but all I’ve had is an apple turnover at Arby’s today – that doesn’t count…right?

22. Still looking for ideas on celebrating my 21st birthday. We’ve got until August 6th to make a plan. I’m all about some input!!

27. I made new headers for the blog!! I always feel so odd sharing my life with you all, but no one ever gets to see me, so now my face is plastered at the top. Should I make more to rotate, or add in some with images of you all? Ohhh the quandary.

28. I think Bob and I are planning on attending the Grand Ole Opry for Valentine’s – we’re waiting on the attendee listing to get good.

AND since no one likes a post without a photo, here is another image from our trip to Belize. I’m half-way done with my editing. I’ll do Day 6 images tomorrow….so hopefully sometime soon- hahaha. School is already crazy with all sorts of fabulous homework. I hope you heard that sarcasm. Have a good one :-)

_dsc4736.jpg

Also, many of you have asked about photo classes in the area. Kristen clued me in to a class at UofL. For $120 bucks you’ll probably take something away. I’ve been asked a lot about doing a little photo class or get together. What would meet your needs best? Email me your ideas to: elizabeth@lizzieloo.com

.lunch.with.kristen.

Posted on January 14th, 2008 by Elizabeth. Filed in Blog reader participation, Family Photos

Friday I had the chance to grab some lunch with the super-referrer and comment contest winner, Kristen. A few months ago I had a contest for blog-readers to be the one to place the 100th comment. The winner would receive an iTunes card in exchange for their good luck and continual commenting – when Kristen won she chose to do lunch over the iTunes option.

A bit more about her. For a while now, this CPA has been frequenting the blog, referring her friends and attending weddings that I was hired to photograph. We tracked a chain of referrals, and 4 weddings have come to fruit from one of her referrals – WOWO – and most exciting for Lizzie Loo!

As we dined we chatted about Kristen and Bryan(the hubbie)’s soon-to-be adoption. They are in line for both an international and domestic adoption – so channel your good-luck vibes their way! We talked about camera options – as Kristen is looking to upgrade to a nice SLR to document their journey, as well as participating in general life chat. Thanks so much, Kristen, for choosing lunch over the iTunes – hope I helped in your pursuit for more photos!! Thanks for helping out in my pursuit to a super-fabulous client base!! Here is a photo of us after lunch (this is with my little point-and-shoot, so no photo critiquing, haha).

dscn0902_blog.jpg

In conjunction with Kristen’s upcoming adoption and the number of families I have photographed recently, most who have adopted, I wanted to share a link with you all. A while ago I met Sarah Havard, a children’s photographer in Lexington. She has started an adoption card store – as she wasn’t happy with the options the card market was providing. Her small endeavor is just beginning – but may be a perfect match for you! You can read more here.

See you tomorrow with LOTS of wedding!

And you really should comment.

.happy.new.year.

Posted on January 1st, 2008 by Elizabeth. Filed in Blog reader participation, Personal

Inspired by Jessica Claire’s list of 101 things to do in the next 1001 days, I’ve created my own list of 28 things to do in 2008. Some are silly, most for myself and lots for the business. Perhaps I will inspire you to help me with #24, and you will share a few of your goals and/or resolution. Happy New Year and come back for tomorrow…I’m taking a stab at #11.

1. finish the office in our home, hanging all of the prints and making it cozy
2. sleep less…there is so much more to do than catch more shut-eye than I really need
3. grow flowers again this summer
4. make weekends my time….except for weddings
5. order stickers for Lizzie Loo…something I’ve wanted to do for a while, it transfers from one to-do list to the next
6. file all paperwork as it comes in, no more stacking it because school is too crazy
7. overhaul the website, and update the images after each shoot
8. take a road trip..just because…with the girls, with Bob, by myself..whatever
9. stay in the Wigwam Hotel in Cave City
10. read 12 books for my business…all in december or one per month; just read ‘em
11. blog everyday for a year, or for a month straight
12. cook dinner once a week for other people, for a month
13. have lunch with someone business related that I don’t know once a month
14. write more notes: birthdays, thank you’s, thinking of you, etc…and mail them on time
15. visit the super-long yardsale that runs throught the South
16. visit a new state and Cousin Julie in Columbus
17. mentor a younger, girl photographer…or lots of mom photographers
18. add a new camera to the artillary, preferable the D3, but a D300 will work
19. make cake decorating class with sister, Abby…and pursue being the most versitile wedding photographer…”Hello, I’m Elizabeth. I can not only make you look great, but I can help you select the perfect wedding ring, the best photographer and construct your cake. In my younger days, I could even design your invitiations.”
20. no more fast food: Panera, Starkbucks and Chic-fil-a are ok, but McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Rally’s etc. are not
21. photograph a wedding with someone whom I REALLY admire; preferable someone whose blog I subscribe to…(bobbiandmike.com, melaniemauer.com, jessicarstrickland.com, the list goes on and on)
22. celebrate my 21st with class…I’m not really sure what that entails, but I’m open to suggestions
23. send more time with my clients, getting to know them and forming relationships, and much less being a service they just use
24. get my readers to comment more, doesn’t matter how I get it done
25. actually complete the books for book club (yes, I’m reeealll nerdy!)
26. attend a wedding as a guest
27. make new headers for the blog
28. Bob takes me to the Grand Ole Opry

What’s on your list?

By the way…the race is over…sorta. Kristen Yoffe won the prize…but amended it. Instead of iTunes, I’ll be treating Kristen to a lunch in November (when she’s in town and done being a super-certified-accountant) where we’ll chat all things camera. I can hardly wait! Kristen and I have corresponded a bit via email about cameras (quite a few months ago). Then at Destiny & Richard’s wedding she introduced herself (great blouse by the way!). Since then she’s been a blog lurker, but finally got brave enough, at just the right time, to comment!

A bit about Kristen, in her words: I’m married to the love of my life. My husband, Bryan, and I are so excited to be waiting for our first child from China. I love taking classes and learning new things. I’m currently pursuing my second professional accounting certification and I have a 2 year degree in Jewish studies. I love to travel and go overseas approximately 3-4 times per year.

When we do lunch, you can count on me taking photos and filling you in! Until then, a new bet…the 500th commenter will win $75 in iTunes. I will raise this to $75 itunes + 2 hours of photo time, wherever you please, if it happens before Christmas. I know you’re out there…my stats show there are lots of blog stalkers…don’t be shy, say hello! Enjoy your Monday!!

You are back! It made my evening to see some new photographs! I will comment more often, the stakes are getting pretty high now! :) Keep up the good work!
