Leila and a little PB : Shelby County Backpack Program Feeds our Kids

GUESS WHAT???? Kroger has peanut butter on sale – 10 for $10 – making them just $1 a piece. Soooo when you’re shopping for your bread and eggs to save you during the snow storm, you should pick up some peanut butters!
Shelby County Public Schools sends home food to the neediest children in our community through the backpack food program to keep them fed while they’re away from school. As I have worked on many of my documentary projects, I got to see how important this opportunity is to the survival of kids in our own town. The program runs off of donations from our community, both food and monetary. Peanut butter is a staple for longer breaks and snowy times. Kids can eat for days on a jar :)
Feel free to drop your PB by the store and I will take care of it. You can even drop it by the Shelbyville branch of Republic Bank and at the School District’s Central Office on Main Street.
Together, lets stock up their pantry!
Shelby County High School Graduation
My little sister graduated from high school – it’s true…I’m old now – and another Lauer is off to college. I’m *so* jealous! Anywho, here are a few frames of my sister and her friends on their big day! Enjoy!

The super-fab SCHS Choir performs here – well the seniors anyway.

My super-cute sister on the way to the car. I LOVE her dress…very Sara.

At the after-party the school throws, Project Graduation, there was a photobooth from Louisville Photobooth.

Me and the sister. I tagged along with my Momma to volunteer for a bit….I ended up photographing the event and had lots*O*fun!

There were lots of games the kids could do – one option was simulated drunk driving. They strapped on goggles to make them ’see drunk’ and had to race a partner around cones with their fancy tri-cycle. Sara raced her friend, Kelsi here. I don’t think either of them finished the course without taking out cones. Drunk tri-cyling doesn’t pay :-)

You could also get ‘married’ for tickets. Quickest wedding I ever shot :-)

Thanks so much to all of you who supported Sara and I to our graduations :-) We’re lucky gals to have such sweet family and friends!

More Shelby County High School Prom
Well, my last final is complete and now I’m working hard to tie up lots of loose ends. So here are more prom photos from my sister, Sara’s, trip to Shelby County High School’s Prom. She’s in the black and red dress, if you can’t tell from our identical-ness.

This is the group of girls Sara has been close with since she was a little girl.

Sara with our dad, Mike…who needs to shave that beard off.

My friend, Allie’s little sister, Jessica and her date.

Some of my FAVORITE ladies.
Last night I made a stop by Shelby County High School’s Prom. Many of you know my long-legged sister, Sara, on the right. Lizzie Loo’s summer intern, Corie, in the middle and Amanda-Baranda (as my father has dubber her) on the left. All three were Lizzie Loo seniors getting ready to graduate soon. More prom in a little bit. Check out all the arm-crossers on the left side of the frame. Prom really brings out the arm-crossing in people….weird.

As the fall comes to a close, unfortunately so has the football season for SCHS. This Wednesday night I made a quick trip home to photograph the Rockets’ end-of-the-year banquet. I’m almost as sad as they are that the season is over! It was a long, emotional journey for the team as they tied state records, broke school records and went further than they had previously been.
After the first couple of games of photographing, I was worried they would never let me in to their experience- would never stop “performing” for the camera and just forget I was around. Just the next week, the boys relaxed, started talking about their coaches in front of me and let me photograph their weakest moments, totally unguarded. And for that, I am so very thankful. The coaches led by example, providing access, and acting as if I wasn’t around. Thanks so much for paving the way for the authentic images the boys let me make.
Back to the banquet. The chicken was great and Claudia Sanders as accomidating for ever, but it was the huge number of folks in attendance that amazed me. So many moms and dads, friends and family that the entire room was full. I got to show my projects to the boys, cheerleaders and coaches – and hand out some images, but the best part came at the end.
After seeing an image of her son, a mom at the banquet asked me why I took the time to drive home week after week to photograph the Rockets. She confessed to following the blog – and was super glad I was around to document the season – especially for the games she couldn’t attend.
I wasn’t sure what to say at first, because from the start of my project, it wasn’t clear to me in what direction the piece would go, where the focus would be and how I could use it in my classwork. I just had a feeling that it was a good place for me to be each Friday night, and whatever came of it, I was sure I could use it in some form or fashion, if for nothing else, the shooting experience.
After about two seconds of thought, the best response I could give was that this community has always embraced and encouraged me as I grew up, shared my opinions and started a business. Photography is the best way for me to thank and support others, thus my attendance with the black box.
Last, to answer an easier question posed by Coach Shipley: Yes, I will be making a few trips home each season to take in a fall Rocket Friday through my lens, so long as I am allowed. This year made the fifth season I have photographed the team. My junior and senior years I photographed for the yearbook and the first two years of college, I attended one game each season. This year, I clearly raised the bar on attendance and plan to continue the journey next year.
Enjoy these images from the banquet – I hope you can feel how connected they are to one another.

OMG!!! She is so cute!!! Puppies love their peanut butters!!! <3
